Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has reportedly been arrested and is is being detained at Naggalama police station.

On Monday, Bobi Wine honored summons issued by Police last week to appear at the CID headquarters in Kibuli. Police had summoned the singer to make a statement on allegations that he had incited violence.

A large crowd of supporters chanting ‘People Power, Our Power’ accompanied him as he drove to Kibuli, paralysing traffic in some parts of the city. Police intercepted the crowd at Kalerwe and was forced to fire teargas and bullets to restore calm.

Now, his lawyer, Asuman Basalirwa has told reporters that Bobi Wine has been arrested.

“Bobi Wine has been brought to Naggalama, put in police cell, they removed his shoes and money he had was given to me, we are waiting to see what will follow,” Basalirwa told the press on Monday.

“Bobi Wine was summoned by Police and he was on his way and was intercepted by Police”.

Basalirwa says it is not yet clear why Police arrested the legislator whom they had summoned to record a statement.

“I don’t know whether police is no longer interested in him recording a statement at CIID headquarters in Kibuli. We haven’t known why he has been brought here, no officer is willing to speak to us.  We are waiting here to know what next,” he said.

At Kalagi township in Naggalama where the opposition politician is being detained, Police maintains heavy deployment after riots broke put in protest of Bobi Wine’s arrest. Some boda boda cyclists who were suspected to have been part of the riots have been arrested. The rioters had lit up fires in the middle of the road in the township.

This comes a week after Police cancelled at last minute a concert dubbed ‘Kyarenga Extra’ which Bobi Wine had organized on Easter Sunday at his One Love Beach in Busabala.
