Police in Kisoro district are investigating the cause of a fire that gutted people’s properties worth an unspecified amount of money in Kyanika, a town bordering Rwanda.
The fire broke out on Friday at around 2am at Kyanika trading centre, at the Kyanika border with Rwanda.
Police say the fire started in a corridor between two kiosks that belonging to Twishimye Robert and Kyakabare Charles.
Elly Matte, the Police spokesperson for Kigezi region said the fire destroyed 12 wooden kiosks plus all the merchandise therein, burning them to ashes.
Other victims who lost their property to the incident are; Niyonzima Innocent, Nsenga Alisen, Mbabazi Rogers, Sebirembo Emmanuel, Rwanika Geoffrey and Kiiza Ivan.
Police says some witnesses suspect it was arson as someone was spotted at the spot moments before the fire broke out.
“Witnesses say that a stranger was sighted in their kiosks at around 2330 hours. They tried to follow him up but the stranger disappeared, ” Matte said in a statement on Friday.
“The victims/witnesses took it lightly went back in their kiosks and slept”.
However, shortly after, fire broke out.
Police say there were no fatalities or injuries to persons.
“No suspect has been arrested so far, the motive not yet established but inquiries are at hand to establish the cause so that these suspects be brought to book,” Matte added.
