Makerere University’s graduation week opened on Tuesday, with over 13,000 students set to graduate through the days until Friday.

The opening day will see students from the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences, Education and External Studies and college of Health Sciences, conferred upon their Degrees.

The ceremony is being presided over by Prime Minister, Dr Ruhakana Rugunda who represented President Museveni, Education Minister Janet Museveni and Makerere University Chancellor, Prof Ezra Suruma.

SoftPower News understands that among those graduating is Hamza Sebunya, the husband to acclaimed Ugandan songstress, Rema Namakula.

At Makerere, he has been pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB).

Hamza, a medical doctor at Mulago hospital shot to the limelight last year when it was reported that he was in an affair with the singer. Rema had broken up with BET Award winning singer, Eddy Kenzo for the doctor who at the time was referred to by many as a gynecologist.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) program is a five year program offered by the Makerere University College of Health Sciences and it qualifies students to pursue these specialties, and many others, after graduation.

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery are the two first professional degrees in medicine and surgery awarded upon graduation from medical school by universities in countries that follow the tradition of the United Kingdom.

The historical degree nomenclature states that they are two separate undergraduate degrees; however, in practice, they are usually combined as one and conferred together, and may also be awarded at graduate-level medical schools.
