Legislators of the ruling party, National Resistance Movement (NRM) from Buganda kingdom Sunday elected Kabula Constituency MP, James Kakooza as their Chairperson and will be deputised by Syda Bbumba from Nakaseke South Constituency.
The elections were conducted during the ongoing NRM caucus retreat at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi.
Others elected are Muyanja Mbabaali (Bukoto South) as Treasurer, Kasozi Muyomba (Bukoto Mid-West) as General Secretary and Simeo Nsubuga (Kasanda South) Publicity Secretary.
Government Chief Whip who is also Kiboga District Woman MP, Ruth Nankabirwa was unanimously elected as an ex-official on the Committee and Bukuya MP, Michael Bukenya Kyabikoola is a Committee Member while Foreign affairs Minister, Sam Kutesa is the committee’s elected Patron.
According to the party’s communications officer, Rodgers Mulindwa, the elected team is mandated “to coordinate Party activities among themselves in Parliament”.
He says the committee will act as a link between the ruling party and Buganda kingdom, to foster development in the region.
“The committee will also be tasked to lobby programmes and projects from government to benefit the entire Buganda kingdom and liaise with Mengo establishment to give support to kingdom programmes set to benefit the region,” Mulindwa said on Monday.
But, doesn’t the new committee contravene the duties of the already existing Buganda Parliamentary Committee, which umbrellas all MPs in the region regardless of the political affiliations?
The newly elected Secretary for Publicity, Simeo Nsubuga who was speaking shortly after the elections, responded to the contrary, adding that the leadership of the Buganda Parliamentary Caucus still exists and comprises of all MPs from Buganda.
