MTN Uganda, the leading telecom company in Uganda has handed over cash prizes worth Shs 66m to winners of the recently concluded MTN Open API Challenge.
A total of nine successful competitors were awarded out of the 22 teams that made it to the finals during the challenge that lasted for three months.
The API challenge which was launched on December 13, 2018 focused on building innovations for digital payments and interested innovators were required to build applications that facilitated digital payments.
The participants were required to create Applications (Apps) that use the MTN Mobile Money Open APIs or to update or connect an existing app with the MTN Mobile Money Open API.
The applications were built on three categories of Transport, HORECA and Distribution in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG).
Speaking during the handover, MTN Uganda Acting CEO, Gordian Kyomukama appreciated whoever participated in the challenge that will play a big role towards development of financial innovation in the country.
“MTN Uganda remains committed to supporting local innovations by enabling local developers leverage our technology infrastructure,” Kyomukama said.
“Our platforms such as the MTN App challenge, MTN Innovation Awards, the MTN Open API and the MTN Startup fund are a testament of our commitment to innovation with the ICT space in Uganda,” Kyomukama added.
The winners in the different categories were; FMCG-Minute 5, Powell Pay, Engineering connections, HORECA- App About, Epay, Sowani, Transport- Easy Matatu, Endobo and Your Waste.
