Mukono municipality Member of Parliament, Betty Nambooze has attacked Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Secretary General, Nathan Nandala Mafabi for attending the national independence celebrations in Sironko district on Wednesday.
FDC had organized parallel celebrations at the party’s headquarters at Najjanankumbi, but Nandala instead chose to shun them and attend the national celebrations presided over by the Head of State, Yoweri Museveni. The same event was graced by Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
According to Nambooze, Mafabi as one of the top leaders in the FDC party should instead have convinced other FDC party members not to hold the parallel function at Najjanankumbi.
“FDC having announced a parallel function on the same day, I expected Nandala-the Secretary General not only to be the organizer but also the facilitator. But instead, Nandala chose to attend the Sironko function,” wrote the opposition politician on Facebook.
Nambooze likened Nandala’s gesture to that of DP’s Fred Mukasa Mbidde when he attended the NRM Liberation Day celebrations in Masindi in 2017.
At the same event, President Museveni would described him (Mbidde) as a good DP man.
“That didn’t only sadden me, but also left me asking whether he is also starting up a good FDC faction”.
“If it was strategically good to attend, why did Nandala sanction a parallel function he wasn’t to attend? He would have convinced his party out of a parallel function,” she added.
The Mukono MP alleges that most of the actors in the opposition do not attend independence celebrations because the ruling NRM monopolies them.
“All of us would have loved to be part of the national celebrations but by consensus and in protest, we chose to stay away from these functions since they were monopolized by the regime and also because there is nothing in most cases to celebrate”.
As such, she says Nandala should apologize to the opposition particularly FDC for acting contrary to the party’s decision.
“When you have lost two children consecutively to the same disease, when a third child catches that disease, you must be so worried. Most opposition people we have lost to the regime start with such simple acts of attending National functions,” she says.
“Brother Nandala therefore owes us an apology or at least an explanation.”
On the same day, musician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine was blocked by Police from holding his Osobola Concert at One Love Beach Busabala over lack of enough manpower to provide security and his failure to fulfill the prerequisite requirements.
Nambooze says this was another reason why she chose not to attend the national celebrations.
“Why should I join Museveni to celebrate when one musician and his fans can’t be allowed to have a music show on the same day?” she asked.
