Police in Kampala have Tuesday morning conducted an intelligence-led operation in Masanafu in Rubaga Division, leading to the arrest of a suspected thug and recovery of more than 30 live ammunition and two sub-machine gun riffles.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SP Patrick Onyango, said in a statement that the operation was conducted at a rented apartment of a one Mulunda Stanley, a resident of Kinonya in Masanafu zone.
He says therein were thugs who opted to exchange fire with the police officers on operation and in the process of shooting, one of the officers “was injured on the leg but he is out of danger.”
Onyango explains that one of the thugs who was identified as Mulunda was arrested and on searching the house, a number of items including one car number plate UAM 046J, 32 live ammunition, two magazines, two SMGs (AK47) riffles, court documents and a hummer were recovered.
“The thug who was arrested is currently detained at the Central Police Station, Kampala and one suspect by the names of Kasirye Richard escaped,” he says, adding that a reward awaits any member of the public who will avail information leading to his (Kasirye) arrest.
This follows an incident of armed robbery during which three people were shot and killed during a heist at the hardware shop in Nansana, Wakiso district, two weeks ago. It was reported that the robbers came on motorcycles and were armed with AK-47 rifles.
A similar incident occurred in Bunamwaya, Wakiso district on Monday night. Two women were shot and killed by armed men riding on motorcycles at around 10pm. The gunmen robbed money.
