Police have come out to clarify on an incident at the residence of retired Justice of the Supreme Court, Prof George William Kanyeihamba involving a security guard attached to Police.
It follows reports that circulated on social media platforms on Friday alleging that Retired Justice Kanyeihamba had been held hostage by the security guard at his residence.
According to the Deputy spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the “minor incident” happened at Prof Kanyeihamba’s residence in Buziga, Kampala.
Police say a police guard at the residence reported to the Professor about the loss of his (guard) father and sought permission to go for burial.
According to Police, Prof Kanyeihamba then ordered the guard to hand over the gun to him, which the guard rejected.
“According to our standing orders, a police officer isn’t allowed to hand over his firearm to unauthorised persons,” ASP Owoyesigyire said.
The Professor later ordered other workers at the residence to lock the gate to restrict the guard from leaving.
This prompted the guard to call his superiors in the chain of command, who visited the residence and he (guard) handed over his gun to them. A new guard was deployed to cover the guard’s beat.
“Therefore rumours circulating that the Retired Justice was held hostage by his guard aren’t true,” the statement by Police adds.
Owoyesigyire says the guard has been given pass leave to go and bury his father.
“It is unfortunate that the retired Justice decided to alarm the public that he is being held hostage well knowing that he is the one who ordered his other workers to lock the gate,” the statement further reads.
