Police has revealed details of the main suspect in the killing of Bugiri district Sheikh, who was arrested on Wednesday, identifying him as Mugoya Abiyasad, a supervisor of SGA private security company.

Police reported on Wednesday that it had made an arrest of the prime suspect in the gruesome murder by murder of Sheikh Mutumba Masudi that happened last week on Valentines Day.

Fred Enanga, the Police spokesperson says the task team which was actively investigating the murder tracked down and arrested Mugoya Abiyasad, a supervisor of SGA private security company.

“Upon interrogation, the suspected shooter admitted to having shot and killed the victim,” Police said.

“He further provided details that led to the recovery of the gun at Rubaga, which went missing on the 14/02/2020 at around mid day”.

The task team also impounded an Ipsum motor vehicle that transported the killers from Kampala to Bugiri, and arrested the driver.

“We would like to inform the public that this is a premeditated and straight forward case of murder, with personal conflict due to land wrangles, as the motivation”.

Detectives are now focusing on the facts and physical evidence, to clearly bring out the roles played by each of the suspects, Enanga said.

“The IGP has commended the task team for their efforts thus far.  The force is committed to tackling those involved in serious organized crime and in particular gun crime, and ensure perpetrators are put behind bars”.

Mugoya is the ninth person to be arrested in connection to the killing. Two days ago, Police said it had arrested 8 people over the killing of a Muslim cleric.

Enanga said on Monday that the task team actively investigating the murder had arrested 8 suspects, majority said to be from one family.

The 8 include a boda boda rider who allegedly transported the killers to and from the murder scene.

“According to preliminary facts, the shootings stemmed from an ongoing land wrangle with Koita Suleiman, also of Busimba village,” Enanga said Monday.

The killed Sheikh is said to have won a Civil suit in Bugiri High Court, which was appealed in Jinja High Court and judgement was due to be read on the February 20.

According to Police, the perpetrators of Sheikh Masudi’s killing held a meeting in their home and planned the murder, well in advance.

“They hired a boda boda rider who transported the gunman and another assailant. The lone gunman made his way to Sheikh Mutumba’s home, called him out, and shot him once to the head killing him instantly. He ran and joined his two colleagues on the boda boda and they escaped from the scene”.
