The driver of the vehicle captured in a video clip making rounds on social media, carrying poles and driving recklessly on the road is on the run, Police says.
The incident occurred on Saturday in Bombo, 21 miles along Kampala – Gulu highway where the driver of a Land Rover old model Reg No UXE 839 was carrying eucalyptus poles loaded in a way that made the vehicle susceptible to an accident.
Police spokesperson, CP Fred Enanga says the incident posed a substantial risk of severe physical injury to other motorists and road users.
“At any stage, you could see that either the poles would fall off or the vehicle would overturn,” Enanga told reporters at Naguru Police headquarters on Monday.
In the clip, another Police vehicle Reg No UP 294 is seen attempting to stop the reckless driver but on seeing the Police vehicle, Enanga says, the driver of the Land Rover parked aside, jumped out of the vehicle and ran away.
“The officers who were on the Police vehicle didn’t expect him to run away but we tried to pursue him but could not get him. He abandoned the vehicle which we towed up to Bombo Police Station where it is parked,” Enanga said before adding that Police has embarked on tracking him down.
He says upon arrest, the driver will be charged with misuse of the road and dangerous loading.
As a result, the Police spokesperson has appealed to the public to continue capturing and sharing such video clips of traffic violations since they help motorists to know what happens on roads.
