The mother to Rwenzururu King (Omusinga) Charles Wesley Mumbere, Biira Mukirania, has Tuesday morning passed on, according to her grandson, Moses Kibanzanga.
In a Facebook post, Kibanzanga said: “With deep sorrow, I announce the passing on of the Rwenzururu Kingdom Queen Mother, Nyamusinga, Biira Christine Mukirania, my dear wife. A sad loss for all Banyarwenzururu and the entire country.”
Mukirania died from Kilembe Mines hospital where she had been admitted a few weeks ago after months of illness. The cause of her death is yet to be communicated but sources say she has for long been battling diabetes.
She is also mother to Minister of State for Agriculture, Christopher Kibanzanga.
The deceased was the widow of Isaya Mukirania, who was at one time, one of the representatives of Bwamba in the Rukurato (Parliament) of Tooro.
Isaya was a grade 2 vernacular teacher in Kitagwenda in Toro kingdom. He later joined politics and represented his home county of Bwamba in that Tooro Parliament.
Her death has come at a time when his son Charles Mumbere and the Kingdom’s former Acting Prime Minister Johnson Thembo Kitsumbire, are facing charges of treason, terrorism, murder, aggravated robbery and being in possession of illegal firearms following an army raid on his Buhikira palace in Kasese Town in November 2016, when they were arrested alongside close to 200 other loyalists.
As one of his bail conditions, Mumbere is under restrictions not to travel outside Kampala and Wakiso districts. He last month in a statement said that he is being held under house arrest by the Army’s Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence.
