The Chief of Defence Forces Gen David Muhoozi has instructed UPDF Engineers to start clearing a floating Island that docked at Nalubaale Dam blocking water flow that resulted into countrywide power outage on Tuesday.
“Silt from the vegetation blocked turbines which affected power generation. It will be removed mechanically using excavators and Tippers from Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre (URDCC) and Ministry of works,” said the Chief of Engineers Brigade, Brig Gen Besigye Bekunda who is supervising the work that started today.
Brig Bekunda explained that there is another floating island 7km away moving towards the dam and needs to be blocked using a wire mesh before it reaches the Dam to cause more damage.
He blamed the occurrence on human activity and increasing water levels of lake Victoria due to heavy rains.
Present to witness the commencement of the exercise was the Commandant Senior Comand and Staff College Kimaka Lt Gen Andrew Guti, the Commandant URDCC Brig Gen Peter Gaetano Omola among others.
