We Shouldn’t Make Mistakes to Outshine Tanzania in AFCON U17 Finals – Coach Kwesi

Uganda's U17 football team, Cubs.

After a disappointing start of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON U17) finals on Sunday when Uganda Cubs lost 1-0 to Angola, coach, Samuel Kwesi, says only a win against hosts Tanzania today will guarantee Uganda’s stay in the tournament happening in Dar es Salaam.

He was Tuesday addressing reporters at the prematch Press conference in Tanzania.

He said Tanzania which also lost 5-4 to Nigeria in their opener, are not a weak team and having played in the same group with Uganda at the qualification stage, makes them even harder to beat.

Kwesi stated that for a team to score four goals in a match, it denotes that they are good in attacking and therefore those they are to face must have a unique and spot-on strategy to outshine them.

“This is a game both Tanzania and Uganda need a win, any team which loses is completely put of the equation and therefore I believe that both teams are going to approach the game with all the seriousness it needs,” he said, adding that his boys needn’t repeat any mistakes made in the Angola match.

“Both teams played in the same qualification group and therefore, it is a derby because they are close neighbours and you can’t predict derbies, so we have to put in a lot of work to be able to get all the three points at stake,” Kwesi added.

On Tanzania’s home advantage, Kwesi said: “Definitely the support will be the 12th person on the field for Tanzania, but in the world of football, support does not win matches. It is your ability on the field that win matches, so we are prepared.”

We have played this team before, I was not in charge at that time, but, I believe they (Cubs) played them and therefore we believe we have that psychological advantage over Tanzania, Kwesi said.

Uganda sits bottom of group A and Tanzania is third with both nations having no point. Nigeria tops the group followed by Angola both with 3 points.

The game will be played at 5pm at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. This is the 13th edition of this tournament and Uganda is playing at the finals for the first time in their history.

Four teams out of the eight currently playing finals, which will reach the semi finals will represent Africa in the FIFA 2019 U17 World Cup in Brazil, South America,

The tournament ends on April 28.
