President Yoweri Museveni has slammed the opposition politicians for the continuous noise and criticism towards government, without any substantive contribution to improving the lives of people that they represent.
The President said this Thursday during the 2019 State of the Nation Address at Serena Conference Centre in Kampala which marked the beginning of the forth session of Parliament.
He said political players within the opposition should stop simply politicking and work to uplift the welfare of the people they represent.
“People are just shouting and wasting time, if they wanted to help, there are ways you can help them wherever you are. You don’t have to be in government to help your people,” Museveni said.
Museveni said, “I hear people going around wasting time, DP DP…; DP without Museveni is not there, because Museveni was a DP, even UPC, I joined UPC briefly for five months and I tried to help our elder but his people were not helping him. So, we had to do other things”.
Museveni noted that in 1966, at the age of 21 years and in DP, that was when he launched the efforts to do away with grass thatched houses that dominated present day Kiruhura district.
He said he began these efforts when he was still in the opposition although he constantly liaised with some UPC members who were in government.
“If you say you are a leader but don’t mind about the welfare of your people, you are nothing because you don’t have to wait to be in government to help your people”.
“I helped my people when I was in DP and UPC was very dangerous not like now when you can abuse, shout, put up your legs,” Museveni said.
He added that, “Please don’t tell me that because you are not NRM, you can’t help your people, rubbish!! you are useless. I am telling you with good authority because I was also in opposition. When I was building NRA I was in the opposition.”
Museveni as well accused the current opposition in the country of only causing destruction as compared to him who was building wealth for his people.
