Former Presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye and six others including Kumi Municipality MP Patrick Amuriat and FDC mobilizer Ingrid Turinawe have been granted bail by the Rukungiri Chief Magistrates court.
Besigye and the co-accused who are facing charges of inciting violence, malicious damage and disobedience to statutory authority were granted a non cash bail of Shs 5 million while sureties committed to Shs 50 million (non cash).
Court dropped the murder charges that had earlier been preferred against the seven persons by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
All the suspects denied the charges and applied for bail which was later granted by Chief Magistrate Julius Barore.
However, sources have told SoftPower that a deadlock dragged on for hours at the court premises shortly after the hearing as police officers both in uniform and plain clothing maintained a heavy presence in what some suspect could be an attempt to rearrest Besigye.
Besigye had moments ago refused to leave court, demanding that all police operatives withdraw from the premises.
Police vehicles blocked the car that Besigye was being driven in to leave court.
“As far as we are concerned police has no business here since we have been charged and granted bail,” Besigye told Radio One on phone.
Besigye whom court released on bail at around 10:00Am failed to agree with police who wanted to take him back to Kampala but he insisted that he wanted to go to his Rwakabengo up-country home in Rukungiri municipality to rest.
Meanwhile, the FDC leader for Rukungiri Municipality Darius Tweyambe was arrested Wednesday morning and taken to an unknown location.
Tweyambe is accused of having had a hand in instigating the violence that opposition supporters metted at the police during a political rally organized by FDC in Rukungiri last week.
Besigye and the co-accused will reappear in court on Novembr 16 to have their case mentioned.
