The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen David Muhoozi has Tuesday met the MONUSCO Force Commander, Lt Gen Derrick Mbuyiselo Mgwebi, in an effort to intensify the campaign against ADF rebels in Eastern Congo.
The two leaders discussed at length the prevailing security situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo where United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO) has a presence.
Gen Muhoozi conveyed condolences on behalf of the UPDF to the Force Commander upon the death of Tanzania UN Peacekeepers who were killed during last year’s ADF attack. A total of 15 UN peacekeepers were killed in North Kivu province in an offensive by the ADF.
The CDF reiterated Uganda’s resolve to work with all regional partners and MONUSCO to totally defeat and wipe out the rebel group.
Gen Mgwebi on behalf of MONUSCO, commended UPDF efforts towards pacifying the region. He pledged MONUSCO full commitment to coordinate with all friendly forces in the region and also support in all ways possible their counter ADF operations when requested so.
The two military leaders further agreed to continue exchanging information of mutual security interest and further pledged to support the Joint follow up mechanism centre established by the ICGLR in Kasese when activated.
The meeting took place on the heels of the 14th January 2018 recently concluded regional meeting of Chiefs of Defence Staff and military Intelligence.
It also comes only a day after President Museveni met with Defence Chiefs and heads of military intelligence across the East African Community (EAC) and agreed to put efforts together to pacify Eastern Congo.
